A family in Kapsara, Kitale, is mourning the painful loss of their daughter, Lornah Chebet, who died following a tragic road accident in Saudi Arabia where she had been working as a housemaid.
According to reports, Chebet had travelled to the Middle Eastern country in search of better opportunities and to help improve the living conditions of her family back home. Like many young Kenyans seeking employment abroad, she hoped to build a brighter future for her loved ones through her hard work.
The fatal accident occurred while Chebet was travelling with her employer, the employer's husband, and their two children on a journey from Abha to Riyadh. Their vehicle was reportedly involved in a serious crash that left several occupants with critical injuries.
Sadly, the employer's husband and one of the children lost their lives at the scene of the accident. Chebet, her employer, and another child were rescued and rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.
Medical personnel fought to save the injured victims, but Chebet later succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at Al Muzahmiyya General Hospital. The surviving child also reportedly passed away while undergoing treatment.
The heartbreaking news shocked her family and friends in Kenya after it emerged on social media. Her sister, Mercy Jepkemoi, later confirmed the tragedy through an emotional video message, describing the loss as a devastating blow to the family.
Family members revealed that Chebet was the fourth-born in a family of six children. They described her as a hardworking, determined, and caring young woman who had sacrificed a lot in order to support those she loved.
As relatives continue to come to terms with the tragedy, plans are underway to have her body repatriated to Kenya for burial. Friends and neighbours have continued to send messages of comfort and support to the grieving family.
The unfortunate incident has once again highlighted the challenges and risks faced by many Kenyans working abroad. It also serves as a painful reminder of the sacrifices thousands make every year while striving to provide better lives for their families back home.
May her soul rest in peace.
