Behind the Camera: Jeff Koinange’s Life, Family, and Media Empire

Jeff Koinange is one of Kenya’s most recognized journalists. Born in Kenya, he is the grandson of the influential Kikuyu leader  Senior Chief Koinange Wa Mbiyu.

 From a young age Jeff showed a strong interest in education and media.

He attended Hospital Hill Primary School and later St. Mary’s School in Nairobi. After completing his early education, he moved to the United States to pursue higher studies. 


He earned an Associate Degree from Kingsborough Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from New York University.

Jeff began his career working with international news organizations. He worked for ABC News, NBC News, and Reuters Television. 

At Reuters, he served as Chief Producer for Africa, managing news coverage across the continent. His work earned him respect and recognition in the global media community.

He later joined CNN as an anchor, where he covered major international events. His reporting reached millions around the world, bringing stories from Africa to a global audience.

 His time at CNN cemented his reputation as one of Kenya’s leading journalists.

After his international success, Jeff returned to Kenya, where he continues to shape the media landscape. He currently hosts JK Live on Citizen TV, a show known for its engaging interviews and breaking news coverage. 

He is also a radio presenter at HOT 96 FM, reaching audiences across the country. His work continues to inspire young journalists who dream of making an impact in media.

Outside his career, Jeff is a family man. He is married to Shaila Koinange, and together they have one son, Jamal Mbiyu Koinange. 

Despite his busy schedule, he often speaks about the importance of family and giving back to the community.
