Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka has shocked many by declining an invitation from longtime ally Raila Odinga to attend the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) 20th anniversary celebrations.

The milestone event is scheduled for October 10th to 12th in Mombasa County, but Kalonzo confirmed he will not be part of the festivities.
Speaking outside Wiper headquarters in Nairobi on Wednesday, Kalonzo said he received a personal invitation from Raila but chose to turn it down.
“Ile kitu nimeona Raila ameniandikia barua akinialika ODM at 20. Mimi sitakuwa huko. I wish them well. I have spent a sizable chunk of my own life to support Raila,” he explained.
Political analysts say Kalonzo’s decision could reflect a growing desire to assert his independence ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
The Wiper leader has previously supported Raila’s political ambitions, but his recent statements suggest he is now charting a separate path.

In the same briefing, Kalonzo commented on President William Ruto’s tenure, predicting that the current president may only serve one term.
Drawing parallels with Malawi’s recent election, where President Lazarus Chakwera conceded defeat after a single term, Kalonzo stated, “Malawi wamesema one term na Wakenya are about to make history; President Ruto lazima atakuwa one term. Tujiandae Ruto atakuwa wa kwanza kusema nimekubali.”
Kalonzo also announced that Wiper will actively participate in upcoming by-elections, fielding candidates in Kasipul, Ugunja, Magarini, and seven other constituencies.
This move underlines the party’s determination to strengthen its grassroots presence while preparing for the next general elections.
Observers note that Kalonzo’s refusal to attend ODM’s celebrations highlights a potential shift in Kenya’s political alliances. While the two leaders share a long history, Kalonzo’s independent stance signals a new chapter for both Wiper and himself.
As Kenya edges closer to 2027, all eyes will be on Kalonzo’s strategies, alliances, and by-election campaigns, which could reshape the political landscape and redefine the Wiper Party’s influence in national politics.
