Former Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi has officially declared that he will contest for the Meru gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, following what he describes as extensive public participation across the county.
In a statement that has quickly stirred political debate in the Mt Kenya East region, Linturi said he had conducted consultations across all nine constituencies of Meru County.
According to him, residents expressed a strong desire to see him vie for the county’s top seat.
“Having listened to the people of Meru across the nine constituencies, both on the ground and through TV and radio stations where they have consistently called on me to come back and contest, I have now accepted,” he said.
Linturi’s announcement signals the beginning of what is expected to be an intense political season in Meru. The county has experienced political shifts in recent years, and his entry into the race is likely to reshape alliances and rivalries ahead of 2027.
