‘Enough Is Enough’ Matatu Drivers Yet Again Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Fuel Prices and Police Harassment

Kenyans could soon experience major transport disruptions after matatu drivers and conductors threatened to stage a nationwide strike over what they describe as unbearable working conditions and increasing pressure within the transport sector.

The workers say they are frustrated by rising fuel prices, constant police crackdowns, high parking fees, and unrealistic daily targets imposed by vehicle owners.

According to several drivers and conductors who spoke through social media and local interviews, many matatu workers spend long hours on the road with little pay while struggling to survive under the tough economic conditions currently affecting the country.

“We are suffering every day. The pressure is too much and nobody is listening to us,” one conductor lamented during an online interview.

The looming strike has sparked fears among commuters who heavily depend on public transport services daily for work, school, and business activities.

Major towns including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru could be severely affected if the planned industrial action goes ahead.

Drivers have also accused county askaris and traffic police officers of constant harassment on roads, saying frequent arrests, fines, and crackdowns have made their work extremely difficult.

They further argued that the rising cost of living has made it nearly impossible for many workers in the sector to comfortably support their families despite working long hours every day.

Transport officials have since appealed for calm as discussions continue between government representatives, matatu associations, SACCOs, drivers, and conductors in an attempt to prevent another nationwide transport crisis.

Some matatu SACCO leaders have also urged dialogue, warning that a strike would negatively affect millions of Kenyans and disrupt economic activities across the country.

If the strike proceeds, commuters may be forced to seek alternative means of transport, a situation likely to cause long delays and sharp increases in transport fares in several parts of the country.
