A wave of school unrest reportedly swept through parts of Kenya on Saturday, leaving several learning institutions counting losses after fires broke out in separate incidents that disrupted learning and forced students to return home.
According to reports, among the schools affected was Agoro Sare High School in Homa Bay County, where a dormitory was allegedly set on fire during a parents' visiting day. The incident shocked many because it occurred while parents were present within the school compound, turning what was meant to be a day of family interaction into a scene of confusion and destruction.
In Nyamira County, Nyambaria Boys High School also experienced unrest after students reportedly set ablaze a county-owned tractor located within the school grounds. The incident raised concerns over the growing trend of destruction of property during student protests.
Another fire incident was reported at a school in Kisii County, although details regarding the institution and the extent of the damage remained limited at the time of reporting.

The incidents have renewed concerns about student unrest in Kenyan schools, especially coming shortly after the tragic dormitory fire at Utumishi Academy Senior School that claimed lives and sparked nationwide debate on school safety.
Education stakeholders are now calling for investigations into the causes of the unrest and urgent measures to address student grievances before more schools are affected. Many parents and teachers have also urged authorities to strengthen guidance and counselling programmes as schools grapple with rising cases of indiscipline and destruction of property.
