Photos have surfaced of a young Nairobi woman who was attacked and doused in acid by her boyfriend in broad daylight.
Reports indicate that the attack which happened in Kibera left the young woman badly injured and fighting for her life in hospital.
Mary Claire, a Seventh Day Adventist singer associated with Redemption Ministries, is currently undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital after suffering serious facial injuries when a corrosive liquid was poured on her in what police suspect was a planned attack.
Based on initial police findings, the attack is believed to have been organised by her former boyfriend, Elis Opiyo.
Investigators claim Opiyo allegedly hired a man to carry out the attack.
The suspect reportedly trailed Mary before confronting her and pouring the acid on her before attempting to escape.
Members of the public quickly responded after hearing her cries for help and chased the suspect before capturing him.
A furious crowd attacked him before police arrived and rescued him and took him into custody.
Police later confirmed that Opiyo was also arrested as investigations continue.
The incident has sparked public anger after it emerged that Mary had earlier reported threats and a previous assault by Opiyo in November last year, but no firm action was taken.
The case has now raised fresh concerns about gender-based violence and the protection of women.
Police have promised to make sure justice is served as Mary’s family continues to ask the public for prayers and support as she continues receiving treatment.
