Matiang’i Defends Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Says his Retirement Should Not Be Treated Like House Arrest

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has strongly defended former President Uhuru Kenyatta over remarks surrounding his life after leaving office.

Speaking publicly, Matiang’i dismissed claims and narratives suggesting that Uhuru’s retirement resembles “house arrest,” saying such descriptions are misleading, disrespectful, and unfair to a former Head of State.

According to Matiang’i, retirement is a normal and honorable phase of life that every leader eventually transitions into, and Uhuru deserves to enjoy his peace and privacy like any other Kenyan citizen.

He warned that the continued use of inflammatory political language could further divide Kenyans and undermine national unity.

Matiang’i also urged politicians, commentators, and media personalities to promote respectful and mature political discourse, especially when discussing leaders who have served the country at the highest level.

He emphasized that words carry consequences and that careless public statements can easily fuel unnecessary political tension.

His remarks come amid ongoing political debates and criticism surrounding Uhuru Kenyatta’s movements and lifestyle after exiting office.

The former CS’s statement has since sparked reactions online, with some Kenyans agreeing that retired leaders deserve respect regardless of political differences, while others insisted public scrutiny remains part of leadership even after leaving office.
