A 22-year-old Uganda Christian University (UCU) law student has died under suspicious circumstances after reportedly refusing to spend the night with her boyfriend. The suspect has been charged with murder, as investigators question inconsistencies in his account.
A 22-year-old final-year law student at Uganda Christian University (UCU), Bridget Arikiriza, has died in a case that has shocked many and triggered a full-scale murder investigation in Uganda.
According to police reports and court proceedings, Arikiriza’s 25-year-old boyfriend has been arrested and remanded to Luzira Prison after being formally charged with her murder.
Authorities say the two had spent the evening of April 8 at a bar in Mukono town. Trouble allegedly began later in the night when the student declined to go home with the suspect, opting instead not to spend the night at his residence.
Prosecutors told the court that the disagreement escalated, with the suspect allegedly forcing Arikiriza into his car, a Toyota Premio. He later contacted a bar worker, claiming that she had been involved in a road accident along Katosi Road.
However, investigations have since cast doubt on that version of events.
Police say the suspect later transferred the victim into another vehicle, a Toyota Mark X, where they were joined by other individuals before rushing her to Mukono Church of Uganda Hospital. Sadly, she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Recheal Kawala revealed that early findings indicated the victim had sustained injuries before reaching the hospital, contradicting claims of a road accident.
“The inconsistencies in the suspect’s account raised red flags, prompting further investigations,” Kawala noted.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and arraigned in court, where he was remanded as detectives continue piecing together what exactly happened that night.
The incident has sparked widespread concern, especially among students and parents, coming at a time when cases involving university students in Uganda have increasingly drawn public attention.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing, and more details will be shared once findings are conclusive.
