A Nairobi woman is at the center of an unusual dating ordeal after allegedly being left to settle a hotel bill of KSh 77,000 following a meeting with a man she had agreed to meet for a date.
According to information shared by her sister, the woman arrived at a Nairobi hotel expecting a one-on-one meeting with the man. However, upon arrival, she reportedly found him seated with another woman. When she sought an explanation, he allegedly assured her that he was attending a business meeting and would join her later.
Trusting his explanation, she remained at the establishment waiting for him. During the several hours she spent there, she ordered food and drinks worth less than KSh 5,000 while maintaining contact with him through phone calls and messages.
Reports indicate that the man later asked her to send him KSh 3,000 in exchange for foreign currency, a request she declined. He allegedly continued reassuring her that he would return after escorting a business associate.
As the evening progressed, communication between the two reportedly stopped. Attempts to reach him by phone were unsuccessful, leaving the woman stranded at the hotel.
The situation became even more complicated when hotel staff presented her with a bill totaling KSh 77,000. It was alleged that the man had made additional reservations, purchased expensive alcoholic beverages, and instructed staff to charge the expenses to her account.
According to claims shared by her family, investigations into the matter suggested that other women may have previously encountered similar experiences involving the same individual.
The woman reportedly offered to pay only for the food and drinks she personally consumed. However, the disagreement over the bill escalated, leading to police involvement. Reports indicate that she and another woman were temporarily detained as authorities investigated the matter, while the man accused of organizing the scheme was not immediately arrested.
The incident has sparked widespread debate online, with many social media users urging people to exercise caution when meeting individuals they know only through online interactions. Others have called for businesses to strengthen verification procedures to prevent disputes over billing and reservations.
The story serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding payment arrangements in advance and remaining vigilant when meeting unfamiliar people in social settings.
