‘Unless There Is Clear Evidence, the President MUST NOT Remove Eliud Langat’ – Robert Alai Reveals
Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai has called on President William Ruto not to dismiss Deputy Inspector-General of Police Eliud Langat unless there is sufficient evidence linking him to any wrongdoing.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Alai criticized what he termed as growing pressure to remove Langat following the controversial death of blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody. Ojwang had reportedly been arrested over social media posts critical of the police.
Alai insisted that Langat should not be punished without proof, arguing that reporting an alleged offence should not be used as grounds for dismissal. He maintained that a professional police officer cannot be penalized simply for reporting a crime.
The MCA emphasized the need to uphold due process, saying both the complainant and the accused deserve justice under the law. He warned against making decisions based on public pressure, arguing that doing so could undermine the country's legal system.
His remarks come as civil society groups and several political leaders continue to push for Langat's suspension pending investigations into Ojwang's death. Alai, however, maintained that any action should be guided by credible evidence rather than public sentiment.
The incident has renewed debate over police accountability, the treatment of detainees, and the importance of respecting legal procedures. Alai's position underscores the need for evidence-based decisions as investigations into Ojwang's death continue.
