United States forces have reportedly killed the leader of an Iranian assassination unit that allegedly attempted to target former U.S. President Donald Trump, according to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Speaking during a press briefing while providing an update on the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, Hegseth said American military forces successfully tracked down and eliminated the individual believed to be leading the operation.
According to the defense chief, the suspected assassination unit had been involved in a plot targeting Trump, prompting a major response from U.S. security and military agencies.
US Military Says Assassination Unit Leader Was “Hunted Down”
Hegseth told reporters that the suspected leader of the unit was located and killed during recent military operations.
“Also yesterday, the leader of the unit who attempted to assassinate President Trump has been hunted down and killed,” he said during the briefing.
He further claimed that Iran had attempted to target Trump, but the plot ultimately failed.
“Iran tried to kill President Trump, and President Trump got the last laugh,” Hegseth stated.
While details surrounding the alleged assassination attempt remain limited, the comments have drawn widespread attention as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate.
US Claims Major Progress in Middle East Operations
During the same briefing, Hegseth said the United States is making significant progress in its military operations in the region.
According to him, the U.S. military campaign against Iranian threats is being carried out “decisively, devastatingly, and without mercy.”
The defense secretary also revealed that additional American military assets are expected to be deployed in the Middle East, including fighter jets and long-range bombers.
Officials say the increased presence is meant to strengthen U.S. security operations and maintain pressure on hostile groups operating in the region.
More US Forces Expected in the Region
Hegseth emphasized that the United States will continue its operations for as long as necessary to achieve its objectives.
“We will take all the time we need to make sure that we succeed,” he said.
The developments come amid growing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, with global leaders closely watching the situation as it continues to evolve.
Security analysts say the claims surrounding the alleged assassination plot could further heighten the already fragile relationship between the United States and Iran.
