Meet Prof. David Ndetei, the Husband of Slain Nairobi Doctor Victoria Mutiso
The murder of leading psychiatrist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso has taken a dramatic turn after detectives arrested two people believed to be linked to the fatal shooting, while fresh details have emerged about her husband, Professor David Musyimi Ndetei, one of Africa's most respected mental health experts.
Professor Ndetei has served as a professor of psychiatry at the University of Nairobi since 1995 and is widely recognised for his contribution to mental health research, clinical psychiatry, and substance abuse studies across Africa.
In 2013, the University of Nairobi awarded him a Doctor of Science degree in recognition of his academic achievements.
He also founded the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation, which promotes affordable community mental healthcare, and later established the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health.
The investigation into Dr Mutiso's killing has now led to the arrest of Rose Mbithe Mulwa, Professor Ndetei's former wife, and her son, Chris Mulwa.
Both are being held at Kilimani Police Station as detectives continue gathering evidence.
According to investigators, the murder may have been motivated by a bitter dispute over a 23-acre piece of land in Mlolongo along Mombasa Road, valued at billions of shillings.
Detectives believe Professor Ndetei bought the property years ago but allege that Rose Mulwa later altered ownership documents before successfully removing him from the land earlier this year.
Investigators also suspect the killing was carefully planned and involved several individuals, including those believed to have carried out the shooting.
They are examining whether the recent wedding between Professor Ndetei and Dr Mutiso may have influenced the events leading to the attack.
Police have recovered several items from the suspects, including mobile phones that are undergoing forensic examination.
Detectives are also analysing Dr Mutiso's phone, the taxi driver's phone, and CCTV footage collected from multiple locations.
A Toyota Prado seen near the crime scene is also under investigation over its possible involvement.
Authorities have ruled out the taxi driver as a suspect, stating that he was only performing his duties and is expected to become an important prosecution witness.
Detectives further revealed that Dr Mutiso had previously received death threats from people believed to be connected to those under investigation.
A postmortem examination is scheduled for tomorrow, while the suspects are expected to appear in court as investigations continue.
