No More Pension? Government Plan Sparks Fear Among Civil Servants

President William Ruto

A wave of uncertainty is spreading across Kenya’s civil service following a proposal by the government to change employment terms from permanent and pensionable to contract-based.

For decades, job security and retirement benefits have been the backbone of public service, offering workers stability in an unpredictable economy. Now, that foundation appears to be under serious review.

The proposal, associated with the administration of William Ruto, aims to restructure the public sector in a move officials say could improve efficiency and reduce long-term government spending.

However, for many civil servants, the announcement has raised more questions than answers.

Concerns over job security, pension benefits, and future livelihoods have quickly dominated conversations both online and offline.

Supporters of the proposal argue that contract-based employment could encourage performance and accountability.

Critics, on the other hand, warn that it may expose workers to instability, stress, and uncertainty especially at a time when the cost of living continues to rise.

As discussions unfold, civil servants and labour unions are closely watching the next steps, hoping their voices will be heard before any final decision is made.

Whether this marks a necessary reform or a risky shift remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the future of Kenya’s civil service may never look the same.
