Since 2008, she has captivated audiences with her portrayal of a strict, dramatic mother-in-law, often stirring conflict in the lives of her daughters-in-law.
She is the daughter of Apollos Mwangi and Zipporah and was born into a family of 12 siblings she has spoken of losing 10 of them over roughly a decade, leaving her with one surviving sibling.
Wanjiru attended Alliance Girls High School, where she developed an early interest in acting through school plays under the guidance of her English and Literature headmistress.
She later studied literature at Makerere University, graduating in 1968. She also obtained a postgraduate diploma (reported in connection with the University of Nairobi).
Outside acting career she has faced marriage issues.Wanjiru separated from her husband, Shem Bageine, Uganda's former Minister for East African Affairs, in 1981 when she was in her mid-forties. Bageine relocated to Uganda after his Kenyan citizenship was revoked by the government in 1987.
Back then in 2020 while speaking to Radio Jambo's Massawe Japanni on a Monday the actress stated that she usually sought for the help of the police in fear that her children, would be murdered by her violent husband.
