- Mt Kenya continues emerging as a key political battleground.
Political realignments in the Mt Kenya region are continuing to reshape Kenya’s political landscape following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in 2024.
The latest leader to reportedly exit the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is politician Chege Njuguna, who officially joined the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), according to a report aired by K24 TV on Wednesday.
The growing movement has attracted several elected leaders from the Mt Kenya region as political camps begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Senators Linked to Gachagua’s DCP Movement
A number of senators elected under the UDA party in the 2022 elections have publicly aligned themselves with the political camp associated with Gachagua. They include:
John Methu
Karungo Thang’wa
James Murango
Joe Nyutu
MPs Associated With The Political Shift
At the National Assembly level, several Members of Parliament have also been linked to the emerging movement. Among them are:
- John Kaguchia
- James Gakuya
- Wanjiku Muhia
- Jane Njeri Maina
- Benjamin Gathiru
- Edward Muriu
- George Koimburi
- John Mukunji
- Jane Kihara
- Eric Karemba
Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has also remained critical of the government while maintaining what observers describe as an increasingly independent political direction.
Grassroots Political Changes Emerging
At the county level, reports indicate that several Members of County Assembly in Kirinyaga shifted from UDA to DCP during 2026, suggesting the political changes are spreading beyond national leadership.
Meanwhile, Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has confirmed leaving UDA, although he has not publicly declared his next political destination.
On the other hand, some prominent Mt Kenya leaders have maintained their loyalty to UDA. They include:
- Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba
- UDA Chairperson Cecily Mbarire
- Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru
Governors Kimani Wamatangi and Kiarie Badilisha have not publicly announced their political positions amid the ongoing shifts.
The Mt Kenya region remains politically significant after playing a major role in President William Ruto’s 2022 election victory. Analysts now view the unfolding political realignments as an important factor that could influence future alliances and voting patterns heading into 2027.
