RIP: Western Kenya Top Politician Shot Dead at His Home by Unknown Gunmen After Escaping 2024 Assassination
Former Chesikaki Councillor and parliamentary candidate for Mt Elgon, Nathan Wasama Masai, has reportedly been shot dead by unidentified assailants.
The shooting happened at his home residence in Tuikut, Cheptais, located in the Mt Elgon Constituency of Bungoma County on Thursday, August 7.
According to reports, the attackers allegedly invaded his home last night, shooting him multiple times before fleeing the scene, leaving him with several gunshot wounds.
Images circulating online following the incident appeared to show bullet wounds on his chest; however, the police had not officially verified the details by the time this article was published.
This tragic event occurs just weeks after Wasama publicly announced his intention to run for the Mt Elgon parliamentary seat in the upcoming 2027 General Election.
This incident also marks the second assassination attempt on his life within a span of two years.
In 2024, Wasama survived a previous shooting when gunmen attacked him in the Kapcheshari area.
During that 2024 incident, multiple bullets struck the back of his vehicle around 7 PM, but he managed to escape unharmed.
Outside of his political endeavors, Wasama was well-known as a businessman, philanthropist.
Hele was also a dedicated member of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church, where he was actively involved in community initiatives.
His untimely death has elicited shock and sorrow among leaders throughout the region, who have condemned the act and called for prompt investigations.
Among the first to express condolences was Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, who characterized the killing as a senseless act of violence and urged authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
