Winnie Odinga Finally Opens Up on Supporting President Ruto In 2027, Ask ODM To Let People Decide
East African Legislative Assembly MP Winnie Odinga says she has not yet decided whether to back President William Ruto in the 2027 race. She added that her late father former Prime Minister Raila Odinga would have contested the presidency given the current state of the country.
Winnie pointed to the slow pace of development under the present government and said her father could have pushed for more. She noted that despite the political handshake between Raila and Ruto that birthed the broad based government arrangement her father would still have jumped into the race looking at how things stand today.
She was careful not to commit herself either way on supporting the head of state.
On whether the Orange Democratic Movement will field its own presidential candidate Winnie said the decision rests with the party and its National Delegates Conference. She urged ODM leaders to listen keenly to what their supporters want.
The EALA legislator called on the party to drop internal wrangles driven by personal survival and instead put the wishes of ordinary members first.
Her remarks come at a time when ODM is grappling with questions over its cooperation with Ruto United Democratic Alliance and the direction the party should take following her father death. Winnie has previously pushed for the party to reconnect with grassroots supporters and strengthen internal democracy ahead of the next general election.
Her comments reveal the ongoing succession debate within ODM and how her late father legacy continues to shape conversations around the party next move. The expected NDC meeting is likely to settle the question of whether ODM will present its own presidential candidate come 2027.
