Residents and commuters along Magadi Road were left in shock after a matatu conductor tragically lost his life while performing a dangerous stunt.
The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared online, showed the young conductor hanging from the door of a moving matatu before losing his grip and falling hard onto the road.
The matatu, identified as Moxie and popular on the Ongata Rongai route, had already drawn attention in recent weeks after another conductor was filmed pulling similar stunts.
In this latest case, the conductor, dressed in a green reflective jacket and jeans, attempted to swing outside the moving vehicle to entertain passengers and onlookers. However, the risky showboating turned fatal.
Industry players and road safety experts have condemned the dangerous culture of matatu stunts, warning that it not only endangers the lives of conductors but also passengers and other road users. One transport official told reporters that “this is a tragic reminder that such reckless behavior has no place on our roads.”
Police have since launched investigations, and calls are growing for stricter enforcement of traffic rules on public service vehicles, especially along busy routes like Ongata Rongai.
For many Kenyans, the video served as a grim wake-up call about the dangers of glorifying matatu culture at the expense of safety.
The conductor’s death has sparked renewed debate on whether stronger regulations and penalties should be imposed to stop such reckless practices.
