Drama unfolded at the Milimani Children’s Court after two teenagers accused of desecrating the Kenyan flag at Nyayo Stadium were ordered to remain in detention until Wednesday.
The boys, aged 14 and 17, found themselves in hot water after a video surfaced showing them mishandling the national flag shortly after a football match on September 20.
The incident, which quickly went viral, sparked outrage from Kenyans who described the act as shameful and disrespectful to the country’s identity.
According to prosecutors, the minors are not only facing charges of desecrating a national symbol but are also accused of being in the country illegally and causing a disturbance at the stadium.
Senior Principal Magistrate ordered the duo to be held at the Gigiri Children’s Protection Unit as investigations continue.
The costly mistake at the stadium has now exposed them to a serious legal battle, with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions insisting that their actions undermined national values and cannot go unpunished.
Parents and child rights activists were present in court, with some calling for rehabilitation instead of punishment.
However, others argued that the ruling sends a strong message to young people that respect for national symbols is non-negotiable.
The case resumes on Wednesday, where the court is expected to give further directions on how the matter will proceed.
