Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is increasingly becoming a central figure in the political conversation surrounding the upcoming Ol Kalou by-election, with analysts viewing the race as a crucial test of influence in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
What was initially considered a local contest has now evolved into a symbolic political showdown between allies of President William Ruto and leaders aligned to Gachagua. Political observers believe the outcome could reveal whether Mt Kenya voters are beginning to shift their loyalty away from the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Reports from party nomination exercises indicate that Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has gained notable grassroots support in Ol Kalou. The strong turnout and enthusiasm witnessed during the nominations have fueled claims that the former deputy president still commands significant influence across the region despite his fallout with the Head of State.
Since leaving government, Gachagua has intensified criticism against the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing it of neglecting promises made to Mt Kenya residents during the 2022 campaigns. His allies now argue that the Ol Kalou contest will effectively serve as a referendum on President Ruto’s popularity within the region.
President Ruto, however, has rejected suggestions that any individual politician controls the Mt Kenya voting bloc. During recent development tours, the president urged residents to evaluate leaders based on service delivery and development rather than emotional political alignments.
The growing rivalry between the two camps is rapidly transforming by-elections and grassroots mobilization efforts into highly competitive political battles. Analysts say the Ol Kalou race may provide one of the clearest indications yet of the political mood in central Kenya following Gachagua’s removal from office.
Meanwhile, opposition figures linked to Gachagua, including Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang'i, are reportedly exploring broader coalition talks aimed at challenging President Ruto in 2027.
As campaigns gain momentum, the Ol Kalou by-election is expected to attract nationwide attention, with both government and opposition camps treating the contest as a major political statement ahead of the next gen
eral election.
