Former beauty queen and addiction recovery advocate Ann Mathu, has shared a deeply personal account of how years of alcoholism, shaped some of the biggest decisions in her life. Including marrying an elderly German man with the hope of one day inheriting his wealth.
Speaking about her journey, Ann revealed that her struggle with alcohol began when she was just 10 years old. She attributed the habit to growing up in a family where alcohol abuse was common, saying her father also battled addiction.
According to Ann, her drinking worsened after her father's death. She later entered a relationship with a doctor who also struggled with alcoholism. When he died, she said she was left with nothing after his family claimed all his property, leaving her devastated.
A close friend living in Germany later offered her a fresh start by helping her relocate. While there, Ann met an elderly man in his 70s at a local pub. Their friendship developed into a relationship and eventually marriage.
Looking back, Ann admitted that her decision was driven more by financial expectations than love.
"The purpose of marrying him was that he would eventually die and I would inherit his property," she said, adding that she was around 39 or 40 at the time while her husband was in his 70s.
She also disclosed that even members of her family were aware of her intentions. According to Ann, her brother urged her to speed up the wedding after noticing the elderly man's persistent cough, believing he might not live much longer.
Despite those expectations, life unfolded differently. The plan she had carefully imagined never materialised, forcing her to confront the reality of the choices she had made while battling addiction.
Today, Ann speaks openly about her past as part of her recovery journey. She has become an advocate for people struggling with alcoholism, using her experiences to encourage others to seek help and rebuild their lives before addiction leads them into decisions they may later regret.
